Prestressed Concrete Offers Structural Benefits for College Expansion

Mar 21, 2023

County Prestress & Precast was selected to supply insulated sandwich walls (ISWs) and hollowcore for Blackhawk Technical College’s Center for Transportation Studies. The automotive educational facility will provide greater opportunities for students pursuing automotive and diesel mechanics, trucking, and related fields in Janesville, Wisconsin.

County Prestress & Precast manufactured and delivered 89 insulated sandwich wall panels and 32 hollowcore planks for the Center for Transportation Studies project.

Prestressed concrete building materials were specified for their versatility and efficiency. To keep pace with the construction schedule and accommodate the building’s unique angles, County Prestress & Precast manufactured each component to be ready for installation upon arrival at the job site. Minimizing on-site preparation helped project leaders reduce the cost of labor and materials and save valuable time.

The Center for Transportation Studies houses an automotive and diesel shop with potential fire hazards, such as gasoline, flammable liquids, and electrical equipment. Using prestressed concrete with three-hour fire ratings offers peace of mind, as concrete resists fire and contains the spread of flames. For this reason, structures built with concrete are often eligible for lower insurance premiums.

Blackhawk Technical College will benefit from the low life cycle cost and enhanced safety benefits of prestressed concrete for the remainder of the structure’s service life, estimated at 60 years or longer.
