Insulated Sandwich Walls Demonstrate Fire Resistance

Oct 27, 2022

County Prestress’ Insulated Sandwich Walls are a reliable building material that contributes to a structure’s ability to withstand natural and catastrophic events.

Prestressed concrete offers unmatched durability throughout its extended service life. Insulated sandwich walls are specified for their resilient fabrication and accelerated installation. Concrete’s inherent fire resistance helps meet building codes that specify fire safety standards. Prestressed wall panels have fire ratings of up to three hours.

Insulated sandwich walls contain a layer of insulation that is “sandwiched” between two layers of prestressed concrete. The panels’ insulation does not contribute to fire loads and reduces the danger of toxic fumes released by burning cellular plastics. Insulated sandwich walls offer significant cost savings, as additional fireproofing measures are not required. Concrete prevents fire spread throughout multipurpose buildings or between structures.

The fire resistance of precast concrete is determined by the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM) E119, which defines the procedures and determines the fire endurance of building materials.
