Prestressed Concrete Bridge Girders Specified for Airport Taxiway

Mar 15, 2023

It takes a lot of strength and durability to withstand the weight of a Boeing 767. That’s why the project leaders for MidAmerica St. Louis Airport chose County Prestress & Precast Prestressed Concrete Bridge Girders for its new taxiway. Located in Mascoutah, IL, the airport serves the St. Louis, MO, metropolitan area.

Taxiway Lima was built to service not only MidAmerica Airport, but also Scott Airforce Base and a new Boeing manufacturing facility. Its purpose is to provide Boeing 767-400,  Boeing C-17, and DC-10-30 airplanes access to a loading area. The proposed taxiway spans a small stream. Therefore, the Taxiway Lima Bridge needed to be built with materials that have exceptional structural strength while requiring minimal maintenance.

Prestressed concrete bridge girders were specified because of their unmatched performance. Additionally, prestressed concrete is proven to endure the freeze/thaw cycles of winter weather, with an extended service life of up to 100 years – an advantage in the Upper Midwest.

Several potential challenges arose before work on the taxiway and bridge began. County Prestress & Precast was asked to supply 37 97-foot-long girders, 74 113-foot-long girders, and 37 86-foot-long girders. Delivering that quantity of girders under an expedited schedule required communication between the customer, project leaders, and County Prestress & Precast. Working together, the project has remained on schedule.

Taxiway Lima and Taxiway Lima Bridge are scheduled to be completed in July of 2023. The new taxiway is expected to reliably serve St. Louis area air travelers for decades.
