Mile-Long Bridge Project Receives National Design Award

Feb 28, 2024

Serving more than 150,000 vehicles each day, the Mile-Long Bridge is an essential corridor in the Chicago metro area. Originally built in 1958, the bridge spans over two major railroads, three water sources, and a commercial area.

To support growing traffic demands and improve safety, a new bridge was completed in 2023. The reconstructed bridge was recognized in the 2024 PCI Design Awards for its innovative design that aims to minimize traffic congestion and protect the waterways below the bridge. The bridge received an honorable mention in the Transportation category with a Main Span Between 76-200 feet.

County Prestress & Precast's Prestressed Bridge Girders measuring 186 feet long were specified for their high performance and durability. For this two-phase project, County Prestress & Precast manufactured and delivered more than 520 girders.

Established more than 60 years ago, the PCI Design Awards program recognizes design excellence and construction quality using precast, prestressed concrete.

A panel of jurors named a total of 19 winners and 15 honorable mentions of equivalent awards. For a complete listing of winners, visit pci.org.
