The Downers Grove Apartments project in Downers Grove, Illinois, added 167 new apartment units and a two-story parking deck to the Chicago suburb’s downtown community.
The project’s urban location and aggressive timeline presented several design and production challenges. The short construction deadline demanded building materials that could be produced and installed quickly, with minimal disruption to pedestrian and commuter traffic.
Because of the site’s layout and limited street access, a tower crane had to be erected on the building’s podium to complete the residential floors. This meant the podium had to be carefully designed to meet excessive loading requirements.
County Prestress & Precast’s Hollowcore proved ideal for the podium and two-story parking garage of this project. Once installed, prestressed planks provide a stable work deck for other trades and are strong enough to support heavy loads from construction equipment.
