Concrete: A Sustainable Building Material

Apr 22, 2021

For construction materials to be considered sustainable, they must meet the needs of today without compromising resources for future generations. Concrete proves to be sustainable in each phase of its life cycle, from pre-production material sourcing to post-service life repurposing.

Material Sourcing & Concrete Production
Concrete is manufactured using water, cement, and aggregates that are responsibly excavated. To offset cement manufacturing emissions, fly ash and other sustainable materials partially replace cement during production. Concrete is manufactured to demand. To prevent waste, excess and unusable post-industrial concrete is recycled and repurposed.\

Lasting Performance
Concrete is a resilient material that builds stronger and safer communities. Its inherent strength and durability contribute to a prolonged service life that is two to three times longer than alternative materials. Prestressed and precast concrete components remain in serviceable condition for the duration of a project with minimal maintenance.

Energy Efficiency
Concrete structures are energy efficient. Their thermal mass properties absorb, store, and release heat to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures and reduce peak energy loads. By shifting energy loads, concrete promotes energy and costs savings that benefit property owners and our planet.

Post-Service Life Repurposing
At the end of a project’s life cycle, concrete can be recycled and repurposed as backfill, road base, or be used to manufacture new concrete.

In recognition of Earth Day, County Prestress is reaffirming our commitment to manufacture responsibly made, long-lasting concrete construction products that make our communities stronger and safer.
