Precast Elevator and Stair Shafts Protect Occupants with High Fire Ratings

Written by Admin | Nov 28, 2023

An estimated 1.5 million fires caused 3,790 civilian fire deaths and more than $18 billion in property damage in the U.S. in 2022, according to the National Fire Protection Association. More than one-third of those fires occurred in or on structures.

Designing for fire-resistance is the best way to protect human life and prevent catastrophic damage to homes or businesses. Using fire-resistant materials like precast concrete can protect buildings and businesses from fire damage and loss and qualify them for lower insurance rates.

Fire ratings for building materials are expressed in hours. A one-hour fire rating indicates the  building component can maintain its structural function during a fire for one hour. County Prestress & Precast’s Elevator and Stair Shafts earn two-hour fire ratings. Fire resistance is especially important in stair shafts because they serve as evacuation routes. Because precast concrete is non-combustible — meaning it cannot burn — it contains fire well, enhancing occupant safety and helping to preserve the structural integrity of buildings.

Precast concrete is designed and manufactured to endure challenging environments, withstand the elements, and provide prolonged service life with low cost. Use precast concrete for your next project by contacting our Customer Service Team at (708) 562-7700.
