Precast Concrete Enhances Resilience Against Natural Disasters

Written by Admin | May 10, 2023

Communities seeking to build infrastructure, businesses, and homes that are highly resistant to damage from natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and tornadoes often turn to precast concrete.

Because of its inherent strength, precast concrete can withstand the direct and secondary forces of wind and windblown debris, making it an ideal material to use for both in-ground and above-ground storm shelters.

In flood-prone areas, precast concrete structures can provide increased occupant safety during and following disasters. The weight of precast concrete keeps structures in place in fast-moving water. Because concrete can withstand high levels of moisture or humidity without the development of mold, buildings can return to service after flood waters recede.

Precast concrete is also the material of choice for structures designed to protect pedestrians from out of control vehicles. Precast concrete barriers have been shown through rigorous testing to withstand the impact of high-speed vehicle collisions and explosions.
